No Wolf Whistles for Sarah Palin's Compassion (Guest Voice)

A lot is being written about Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, but in this Guest Voice post journalism professor and author Walter Brasch , an award-winning syndicated newspaper columnist and radio commentator, and president of the Pennsylvania Press Club, looks at an aspect that hasn’t gotten much attention. Guest Voice post do not necessarily represent the opinion of TMV or its writers.

No Wolf Whistles for Sarah Palin's Compassion

by Walter Brasch

Defibrillator usage increased last week after John McCain announced Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential running mate and only a heartbeat from the presidency. But, shortly after most Republicans were shocked back to life they circled the wagons to declare she was the perfect choice. Apparently, the cure also included a dose of psychotropic drugs as well.

The pundits and commentators rallied beside Palin, even lying about how great her ghost-written acceptance speech was, apparently in the mistaken belief that they are being fair and balanced. Since Palin is the topic of everyone's greatest love or deepest enmity, I won't be writing about her life and most of her positions.

I won't write about her lack of experienceor her outrageous statements that she has more experience than Barack Obama, and her delusion that she deserves any of Hillary Clinton's 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling.

Although I would like to say something about her vicious attacks on community organizers, persons who sacrifice so much to help those with so little, I won't. That's for others to talk about.

The fact she's running on a ticket headed by a man who opposes lobbyist influence, yet had her inauguration as governor sponsored by an oil companywell, I won't even bring that up. And, of course, I won't say anything about her excessive use of pork barrel funds that McCain also opposes. And, I see no reason to point out that McCain's first two choices of Joe Lieberman and Tom Ridge were somehow vetoed by the Republican leadership.

I'll let others write about how Sarah Palin and George W. Bush both believe they are fiscal conservatives, but both are more "tax-and-spend" than the wildest liberal. For Bush, it was beginning office with a surplus of more than $236 billion and running up a $427 billion debt in less than five years. For Palin, it was a balanced budget at the beginning of her six years as mayor of a town of 5,000, and leaving it with a debt of about $20 million.

Madison ironman

Although there is no evidence she has had any interest in foreign policy, she did manage to tell us she's sure that the war in Iraq is "God's will," and that Americans soldiers were sent to Iraq on a "task that is from God." Nope. I won't write about that, either. There's really no need to comment upon the two ethics investigations that have been launched against her for abuse of her office or reasons why seven witnesses suddenly have decided not to testify.

There's no reason for me to discuss her belief that Alaska schools should teach creationism, and that she's has doubts about the theory of evolution.

The fact that she believes library books should be banned if they have passages that disagree with her own beliefs, and that she tried to fire the city librarian who disagreed with her beliefs, won't even be discussed.

And, certainly, I won't discuss her personal family life. Not her beauty queen background or her family values agenda that opposes single motherhood and supports only abstinence education instead of a comprehensive sexual education program. Her unmarried 17-year-old high school drop-out pregnant daughter can discuss that.

I certainly won't write about her belief that she is certainly not a proponent of the Green movement, and apparently believes it must be magic fairy dust that created Global Warming, since she doesn't believe that people caused what's melting the ice in Alaska and putting polar bears in danger of extinction. Not that she caresshe supports disrupting the balance of nature by drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), which McCain opposes, and opposes a federal rule, enacted by the Bush Administration, which makes polar bears a threatened species.

And that's what I am going to write about. Sarah Palin and her boom-boom mentality. She loves to kill animals. As a youth, she went out daily so she could enjoy mooseburgers. I don't know how much burgers a slaughtered moose can provide, but I suspect that if she, her family, and all of their friends ate all of the moose she killed, the cholesterol and obesity levels in Wasilla, Alaska, would be significantly higher than the national average.

Killing moose is apparently one of the reasons that as governor she encourages wolf hunts. Alaska is the only state that allows hu ...

Turkish president pays landmark visit to Armenia (AFP)

YEREVAN (AFP) - The presidents of Armenia and Turkey pledged Saturday to overcome decades of enmity between their two nations during the first visit to Yerevan by a Turkish head of state.

Abdullah Gul held talks with Armenian counterpart Serzh Sarkisian after which the two agreed there was now the "political will" to improve relations frozen for decades by lingering bitterness over 1915-1917 massacres.

Gul's visit was hailed by French and EU President Nicolas Sarkozy as "courageous and historic" at a time when the Caucasus region is in turmoil following the conflict in Armenia's northern neighbour Georgia.

But in a sign of the hard road ahead, Gul's arrival at Yerevan's Hrazdan stadium to watch a World Cup football qualifier between the two nations was greeted by loud boos and hisses by Armenian fans.

Amid tight security, Gul took his seat behind a special bullet-proof area and had to listen to the chorus of boos that accompanied every positive move by the Turkish team. The far stronger Turkish side ended up winning the match 2-0.

"I hope that this visit will create the possibility to improve bilateral relations," Gul had said earlier in the Armenian capital.

Sarkisian declared there was a "political will to decide the questions between our countries, so that these problems are not passed on to the next generation."

He also said he had been asked by Gul to attend a return football fixture in Turkey on October 14, but did not say whether or not he had accepted.

The two countries -- which have no diplomatic relations -- have waged an international diplomatic battle over Yerevan's efforts to have the 1915-1917 massacre of hundreds of thousands of Armenians recognised as genocide.

Several hundred angry protestors lined the route of Gul's motorcade as it made its way into the capital from Yerevan airport, holding aloft the Armenian flag and nationalist emblems.

"We are here because we want to tell the entire world that we do not forget the genocide of 1915. We will not welcome Gul or any other Turk until they have recognised the genocide," one protester, Bardasar Akhpar, told AFP.

At the start of the match about 80 young protesters gathered at a monument to victims of the killings in central Yerevan, laying flowers and lighting torches.

"We want to draw (Gul's) attention to this monument, so he knows it is not standing empty and that people have gathered here to show that the young generation remembers everything," said organiser Airapet Babaian.

Armenians say up to 1.5 million of their people were killed between 1915 and 1917 in orchestrated massacres during World War I as the Ottoman Empire fell apart -- a claim supported by several other countries.

Turkey rejects the genocide label and argues that 300,000-500,000 Armenians and at least as many Turks died in civil strife when Armenians took up arms for independence in eastern Anatolia and sided with invading Russian troops.

Turkey's footballers were supported by only about 200 forlorn followers in a seating area that could have held 10 times more and was ringed by Armenian police.

Both sets of fans however departe

Hampshire Employment Solicitor Asks Are You Really Self Employed?

Do you consider yourself self employed or have contractors that you consider to be self-employed? Do the contractors turn up to work everyday, have tasks and assignments controlled by the employer, complete assignments on site using company property, and seem to be treated like an employee? If so, you have employees and not self employed contractors even if you have a contract that states otherwise. Many contractors wrongly pretend to the HMRC that they are self employed even though legally they are considered employees.

In a recent Court of Appeal case it was decided that two workers who identified themselves to the HMRC as self employed contractors could actually argue that they were employees when it suited the situation. The employees were able to bring unfair dismissal claims against the employer even though they had contracts that claimed these were self employed individuals. If you are an employer, this case should cause you some alarm because your company could be open to an unfair dismissal claim when you terminate a contract. All companies really need to make sure that the workers they are using are truly self employed contractors and not employees in disguise.

The court found that these employees were originally brought in as self-employed contractors but later, through the actions and suggestions of the employer, they became full employees. Proper training for your management team is essential in order to prevent this situation from happening to your company. Train your managers on how to deal with and how to treat your contractors in order to prevent them from treating a contractor like an employee.
